Cloud solutions enable the rapid exchange of large amounts of data and the joint editing of documents. Until now, tax consultants and lawyers have had the DATEV Cloudbox at their disposal in their day-to-day work. The application ensured sufficient data protection. However, DATEV as the provider has discontinued the service. We therefore present the TeamDrive service as an adequate alternative to DATEV Cloudbox.

Termination of DATEV Cloudbox

The market exit of DATEV Cloudbox was completed on December 31, 2020. The decision to do so was made by the provider itself. As a reason, the company stated that the service has functional limitations that severely restrict the benefits for customers. Accordingly, there will be no further support for the application because customers were not satisfied with the application itself.

DATEV’s Cloudbox was developed especially for tax consultants, but also for lawyers and auditors. In DATEV’s data center, the consultant and his client were given storage space to exchange documents. Thanks to the DATEV SmartLogin procedure, all sensitive data in the upload area was well secured.

In addition, individual rights could be set up for users and folders created. Each individual file was checked for viruses during upload or download. The service for companies in the tax and legal sectors was available for five euros per user per month.

In general, DATEV’s extensive service is certainly suitable for making the everyday work of certain professional groups easier. Why the Cloudbox is nevertheless no longer provided, we explain in the following paragraph.

Why was Cloudbox discontinued by DATEV?

Forums show that users consider the Cloudbox to be overpriced. This opinion is based on the fact that the monthly price had to be borne by both the consultant and the client. In addition, there is a list of other criticisms of the product itself and its functions:

  • Display of the used memory does not work

  • Upload limited to 99 files

  • no mobile use via smartphone possible

  • long time for setting up a new client

  • no documentation of files that have not been uploaded

The DATEV community mostly expresses disappointment with the service and criticizes its problems. For this reason, DATEV now only provides a service for sending e-mails securely using encryption. If you as a consultant still want to benefit from the advantages of a professional cloud solution, the TeamDrive service is a good choice.

TeamDrive as an alternative to DATEV’s cloud box

TeamDrive is a highly secure cloud service for data storage and data exchange. Like Cloudbox, it meets the highest data security standards. The transfer of data takes place through end-to-end encryption and is GDPR-compliant. Through an MS Outlook add-in, the sending of attachments via e-mail is also encrypted. Decentralized storage of documents and regular backups protect your data optimally against unauthorized access and other failures.

In contrast to Cloudbox, TeamDrive offers the function that you can access your documents from any device, regardless of location. This includes a PC, laptops, tablets or the smartphone. In addition, tax consultants receive an unlimited number of free licenses for clients.

This means: tax consultants pay 5.66 euros per workstation and month and receive additional licenses for clients (limited to one space) at no additional cost. A separate agreement on professional secrecy in accordance with Section 203 of the German Criminal Code (StGB) enables many professional groups to use TeamDrive’s software for flexible use cases for storing data. This also applies to the use of clouds for lawyers and notaries as well as the use of clouds for tax consultants and auditors. They all work with sensitive content and key figures.

Accordingly, TeamDrive offers all the technical possibilities of Cloudbox. The advantage comes from the much lower price, because users do not pay additionally for client licenses.
