The TeamDrive architecture
As standard, we offer you the TeamDrive Professional Cloud, a solution with which your data is stored highly encrypted on cloud servers in German data centers.
TeamDrive then fully takes care of the hosting and operation of all servers that are part of the TeamDrive architecture (see Explanation of the components hosting server, registration server and WebPortal server below).
Cloud, On Premise, Hybrid
However, TeamDrive is consistently modular designed and therefore individual adaptable to your company requirements. That's why you can choose to have these servers hosted by TeamDrive, but you can also host and operate them yourself under your complete control.
It is your decision whether you have all servers hosted by TeamDrive (TeamDrive Cloud), whether you host all servers yourself (On Premise) or whether you host some of them yourself partially hosted by TeamDrive (Hybrid). You can also combine existing servers in your company with hosted cloud services.
It is also possible to connect a OneDrive or Azure account or to set these external cloud storage locations as the storage location for your encrypted files. This means you can also use storage space that is available to you from a Microsoft 365 license, for example, to operate TeamDrive.
The only server that you cannot host yourself is the TeamDrive Global Name Server, or TDNS for short.
The TDNS is a completely anonymized service operated by TeamDrive Systems. He manages the integrity of all registered TeamDrive users worldwide without having knowledge of their usernames and email addresses.
The TDNS has two tasks:
- For all existing registration servers, it ensures that every email address and every user name only exists once in the global TeamDrive network (Kosmos) and is therefore unique and unique.
- In addition, all clients that invite a user who is not registered on their local registration server ask TDNS whether this user already exists somewhere in the world. They then collect the desired public key from the respective registration server, provided that the local administrator has permitted the release of the key.
Each TeamDrive Client (e.g. the TeamDrive app) can connect to multiple TeamDrive hosting servers and with multiple TeamDrive registration servers communicate simultaneously.
Hosting the servers yourself gives you full control over the functionality and configuration of your clients
Regardless of the architecture chosen, the contents of all TeamDrive Spaces are always protected by multiple levels of encryption, automatic key generation and full end-to-end encryption based on the AES-256 encryption standard secured.
The TeamDrive components
No matter how you want to use TeamDrive - whether completely in the TeamDrive Cloud, Hybrid or On Premise: Every TeamDrive solution consists of at least the components hosting server, registration server and a TeamDrive client. In addition, the WebPortal server is often used.
Your files are stored on the hosting server. In our standard cloud solution TeamDrive Professional, the hosting server is the TeamDrive cloud server - in short: the TeamDrive cloud. This is located in a German data center and is absolutely GDPR compliant.
If you prefer to host your data on your own or in-house, you need the TeamDrive Enterprise Hosting Server.
The TeamDrive Enterprise Hosting Server software is based on the Linux/Apache/MySQL environment and is available as a pre-installed VMware image, which offers fast deployment and a easy setup< /b> enables.
The TeamDrive Enterprise Server supports individual user provisioning for storage space and data traffic. It can support up to 10,000 users per server instance and scales easily to hundreds of thousands of users.
All data stored on the server is fully encrypted (AES-256) by the TeamDrive clients (e.g. TeamDrive app) before transmission - i.e. locally on the user's computer and before transmission via the Internet. The encryption keys are only stored on the user's computer. They are not accessible from the hosting server.
The TeamDrive server is managed via a web-based management console. Alternatively, the TeamDrive Server offers an API that allows the server to be managed and integrated into any Helpdesk, ERM or HTML portal to integrate.
The TeamDrive Enterprise Server also offers a hybrid cloud functionality, which allows you to operate multiple clouds (private or public), which remain independent units but are connected to each other and the Offer advantages of multiple deployment models.
TeamDrive users must be authenticated and managed. If you use our standard cloud solution TeamDrive Professional, we take full care of the hosting and operation of this server.
However, if you want to manage user registration and administration yourself, you will need the TeamDrive Enterprise Registration Server.
The TeamDrive Enterprise Registration Server is the central instance for encrypted client communication. It is based on a Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP environment and typically supports 10,000 users per CPU core. Registration Server is available as a pre-installed and pre-configured VMware image, allowing for quick deployment and easy setup.
The TeamDrive Enterprise Registration Server is responsible for the following tasks:
- Management of TeamDrive users (configurable for alternative use of various external authentication systems)
- Managing TeamDrive client license management
- Public Key (PKI) for all clients to enable RSA-3072 encrypted communication
- Trust Center for encrypted User Backup Space Key Repositories
- Multi-tenant solution that can host multiple predefined client configurations
The easy-to-use, web-based management console enables advanced help desk tasks and mobile device management functionality, such as remote wiping of devices. It also provides an API to support custom integration with other systems.
External Authentication Option (AD/LDAP, Oauth 2.0, ADFS and Vasco)
TeamDrive supports external authentication. In this configuration, the authentication data is not on the TeamDrive Registration Server itself, but points to the external directory service for Single Sign On purposes (SSO).
The TeamDrive Client can display an alternative login window in the form of an embedded web browser. By default, this panel is disabled, but can be enabled explicitly by sending the appropriate client settings from the registration server.
An example PHP code for connecting to an existing AD/LDAP system via the TeamDrive web authentication process is included.
In order to work with TeamDrive and use its functions on your devices, there are various Apps (Clients) available to you, which are presented below.
TeamDrive app
The TeamDrive app is the standard application for using TeamDrive on your PC under Windows, MacOS, Linux or your mobile devices with iOS or Android. It includes all data management functions.
On our download page you will find the app to download for all of the operating systems mentioned.
Most of the functions offered in the app are also available in the TeamDrive web app (see chapter on web app). With the web app you can use TeamDrive browser-based and completely without installing the TeamDrive app.
Web app
You can even access your data without installing a TeamDrive app - browser-based via a web app. Most of the functions of the TeamDrive app are also available here.
The web app is often used by guest users who, for various reasons, do not want to or cannot install software on their devices.
The web app can be accessed via the corresponding link in the navigation menu of our TeamDrive website. To log in to the web app, please use the access data for your TeamDrive user account.
Server app
You can also use our TeamDrive Server App. The TeamDrive Server app (formerly: TeamDrive Agent) allows you to install TeamDrive on a server.
It offers, among other things, all the functions and services of the TeamDrive app - but without its graphical user interface.
The TeamDrive Server app is primarily of interest to system administrators who want to consolidate their servers. Among other things, it is used to ensure that existing local drive shares can continue to be used unchanged.
It also ensures that the data is saved as a backup in the cloud and that employees can access the data securely from outside the company network - without complex and expensive VPN management.
The server app provides an open API, which makes it possible to easily connect third-party systems to the secure data transfer from TeamDrive.
Find out more about the advantages and possibilities the TeamDrive Server app offers!
The TeamDrive WebPortal Server enables the browser-based use of TeamDrive via the TeamDrive Web App. You don't even need to install a TeamDrive app on your computer.
The web app is often used by guest users who are not TeamDrive users themselves and for various reasons do not want to or cannot install the software on their devices.
Most of the functions that the TeamDrive app offers you are also available in the web app. The Web app can be accessed via the corresponding link in the navigation menu of our TeamDrive website. To log in to the web app, please use the access data for your TeamDrive user account.
The WebPortal Server starts a separate instance for each user in a sandbox, in which the web client (web app) of the logged in user is started.
At runtime, the space files that the user requests in the browser are kept decrypted in RAM.
After the session ends, the contents of the sandbox are stored encrypted. This can only be decrypted by the clients of authenticated users.
