What is FUSE for Mac?

FUSE for MacOS allows you to extend your MacOS file management capabilities to third-party file systems.
As the Mac operating system requires such an interface, the content can not be distributed and installed directly with the normal installer as is the case with Windows.
The product used to be called macFuse or osxFuse before a corporate takeover.

Why FUSE for Mac?

FUSE for MacOS is not delivered with the TeamDrive Installer for MacOS. For license reasons, MacOS users must manually install the FUSE for MacOS system extension themselves. This applies to updates and new installations of TeamDrive. After installing FUSE for MacOS, TeamDrive recognizes the system extension (only after a TeamDrive restart) and the virtual file system is then available for use.

FUSE for Mac is only required to use the Virtual Disk System (VDS) on MacOS computers.
The VDS is a handy alternative if you have a large number of files in your Spaces, but only need to access and edit a few at a time. Since TeamDrive wants to mount a digital drive for the virtual file system on the computer, FUSE for Mac is required specifically for MacOS.

If you store all your files offline on your computer, we strongly recommend that you do not use the virtual file system, as the operations performed and functions used by TeamDrive are necessarily based on third-party software. Accordingly, there may be friction between the non-native software from FUSE for Mac and TeamDrive. Working with local files and TeamDrive is the most robust solution.

Notes on installing Fuse for Mac

After FUSE has been installed, macOS may provide a dialog asking for access to be granted for FUSE. It is important to reply ‘yes’ to these dialogs in order to use FUSE in conjunction with TeamDrive. Otherwise, it will be necessary to open system preferences and manually allow access. If TeamDrive is not given access to “Removable Volumes” and “Network Volumes”, then the FUSE volume will not be able to be mounted.
