Local and Cloud Storage: Why do I see a difference between the two?

The amount of cloud storage used and shown in the TeamDrive client generally differs from the amount of storage used in the local file system of your device.

To put things into perspective, the local file system of your device contains only the current versions of files marked as “offline available”. However, on the server, the following is stored and calculated into your cloud storage usage:

– all files stored in all of your Spaces, whether the Spaces are active or inactive
– all previous versions of files (default setting)
– the contents of each Space’s trash
– all server snapshots of each Space

The server stores all data pertaining to your Spaces until the data are permanently deleted from the server. In some cases, the size of a Space on the server may be smaller than the size of the Space in the local file system of your device. This is because all data are compressed and encrypted before they are uploaded to the server. The local Space files on your computer are, however, neither compressed nor encrypted and typically use a little more space than the compressed files on the server. However, the size of a Space generally increases once the amount of file versions increases and once server snapshots begin to be created.

To free up cloud storage

from unwanted or no longer needed data, please try the following options (please be advised that to permanently delete files from the server you need administrator rights in the given Space).

  1. Delete unwanted or no longer need file versions. File versions can be manually or automatically deleted.
  2. Empty a Space’s trash. A Space’s trash can be manually or automatically emptied.
  3. Delete unwanted or no longer needed server snapshots.
  4. Permanently delete Spaces from the server.
