A private cloud is practical, no question about it. We’ll show you how to create your own cloud with TeamDrive!
You edit a file on your computer in your office – and a few seconds later one of your colleagues can continue working on the same file at another location. With cloud services, this type of networked work is not only possible, it’s already part of everyday life in many industries. If you have lost confidence in the large providers Dropbox, Microsoft & Co. against the background of the new Data Protection Ordinance (DSGVO) and increased scandals about “data leaks”, a private cloud of your own can be the right backup solution for your company.
Webspace: From server to data center
The private cloud exists exclusively for your company and – unlike a public cloud – is not publicly accessible. The basic requirement for creating your cloud is therefore a server on which the web space for your own cloud can be hosted. The special advantage of your own server is complete control over the server location. Unlike other countries outside Europe, Germany has clear and particularly strict data protection regulations, especially since May 2018.
In order to set up your own data center, however, you have to reckon with certain investment costs and running costs – both for the hardware and for the installation and maintenance by qualified IT staff. Depending on the requirements and scope of your private cloud, a single server may not be sufficient. Compared to conventional IT structures, your own cloud can still be operated leaner and more cost-effectively in most cases.
Contrary to what the name might suggest, your own cloud does not necessarily have to be hosted by your company and on your company premises. In the meantime, there are a number of external providers who offer an infrastructure exclusively for your use and thus make their own cloud possible. Before you decide on this solution, it is advisable to take a closer look at the server location of the provider – ideally this should be Germany only.
(Almost) everything a question of software
However, the web space required is only the first step towards your own cloud – the decisive component is functional, flexible software. Choosing the right software not only affects the performance of your cloud, but also determines the look and feel of the user interface and the usability for users with different levels of knowledge.
In order to protect your data in your own cloud against attacks and unauthorized access from outside, encryption is recommended – especially for personal data. In the best case, data protection should already be a component of the chosen software solution.
