What are server snapshots?
Server snapshots are an important part of a data recovery feature, which allows users to roll a Space back to an earlier point in time. To make rollbacks possible, the client automatically generates and stores server snapshots of your Spaces on the server. The size of the server snapshots, however, are also included when calculating the amount of storage used on the server.
Server snapshots is a server-side feature, which means it is, as a default setting, activated for all users regardless of which TeamDrive client version they are using. However, to manage and use this feature a minimum TeamDrive client version of 4.5.5 and a professional TeamDrive client license are required. A free TeamDrive client license only allows you to completely enable or disable the server snapshots feature. It is not possible to manage your server snapshots and/or roll the Space back to an earlier point in time.
In order to be able to delete individual server snapshots for a specific Space, administrator rights within that Space are required.
Delete individual server snapshots
please do the following:
- Navigate to “Active Spaces”.
- Hover the mouse over the desired Space (on iOS and Android swipe the Space from right to left) and click on “i” to open the Space’s “Information” page.
- Click on “Advanced” > “Server Snapshots”.
- To configure or disable the feature altogether, click on “Configure Server Snapshots”.
- To delete individual server snapshots, hover the mouse over a server snapshot (on iOS and Android swipe the server snapshot from right to left) and click on the trash can. Please be advised, that all server snapshots older than the selected server snapshot will also be deleted.
Deactivate or configure server snapshots
please do the following:
- Navigate to “Active Spaces”.
- Hover the mouse over the desired Space (on iOS and Android swipe the Space from right to left) and click on “i” to open the Space’s “Information” page.
- Click on “Advanced” > “Server Snapshots”.
- To configure or disable the feature altogether, click on “Configure Server Snapshots”.
- To deactivate the feature, turn off the switch next to “Enable Server Snapshots”.
If you are neither the Space owner nor have administrator rights within the Space, it will be necessary to contact a user with administrator rights within and request that the necessary server snapshots be deleted.
Find out how much storage the server snapshots are occupying on the server
please do the following:
- Navigate to “Active Spaces”.
- Hover the mouse over the desired Space (on iOS and Android swipe the Space from right to left) and click on “i” to open the Space’s “Information” page.
- Click on “Size and Files” to see how much storage the Space is using on the server.
A quick way to free up storage is to disable the server snapshots feature for about 15 minutes (it usually takes 10-15 minutes for the server snapshots to be permanently deleted from the server). Once everything has been permanently deleted from the server, the server snapshots feature can be reenabled. An alternative would be to individually delete specific server snapshots. Both methods are described above.
Load a server snapshot
please do the following:
- Navigate to “Active Spaces”.
- Hover the mouse over the desired Space (on iOS and Android swipe the Space from right to left) and click on “i” to open the Space’s “Information” page.
- Click on “Advanced” > “Server Snapshots”.
- To load a server snapshot, hover the mouse over the desired server snapshot (on iOS and Android swipe the server snapshot from right to left) and click on the eye icon to load a preview.
- In order to load the preview, the Space must be restored on your machine with the contents of the server snapshot you are previewing. During a restore, the existing local Space folder is renamed to “_backup” and all files located in the Space at that time will remain in the renamed folder. With that said, any file changes that were not uploaded before the Space restoration was started must be manually added (e.g. by using drag and drop) to the newly restored Space. As the restoration process continues, a new Space folder with the original name will be created and the Space’s contents will be either downloaded from the server or copied from the “_backup” folder.
Cancel the server snapshot preview
- Return to the list of server snapshots.
- Hover the mouse over the server snapshot you loaded (on iOS and Android swipe the loaded server snapshot from right to left) and click on the ‘X’.
- The Space will then be restored to its current state on the server.
Accept and permanently load the server snapshot
- Click on the check mark instead of the ‘X’.
- Once the server snapshot has been accepted, the Space’s current state on the server will be changed to reflect the changes.
- At this point, all Space members will need to restore the Space in order to continue synchronizing changes.
Restore a Space
please do the following:
- Navigate to “Active Spaces”.
- Hover the mouse over the desired Space (on iOS and Android swipe the Space from right to left) and click on “i” to open the Space’s “Information” page.
- Scroll down and click on “Restore”.
- During a restore, the existing local Space folder is renamed to “_backup” and all files located in the Space at that time will remain in the renamed folder. With that said, any file changes that were not uploaded before the Space restoration was started must be manually added (e.g. by using drag and drop) to the newly restored Space. As the restoration process continues a new Space folder with the original name will be created and the Space’s contents will be either downloaded from the server or copied from the “_backup” folder. However, only those files and file versions which can be found on the server will be copied over from the “_backup” folder.
