What to do after using Time Machine to restore or migrate your data
After using a Time Machine backup to restore your machine or migrate your data to another computer, it is possible that TeamDrive will no longer function as it should due to potential changes in the file system. This issue is, however, not a serious one and can be remedied as follows.
- Quit TeamDrive completely.
- If you are using TeamDrive 3: “TeamDrive 3” > “Quit TeamDrive 3”.
- If you are using TeamDrive 4: “TeamDrive” > “Quit TeamDrive”.
- If you are not using the latest version of TeamDrive, please uninstall TeamDrive using the TeamDrive uninstaller located in the TeamDrive folder. Afterwards, proceed to step 7. In the event you are already using the latest version of TeamDrive, please continue to step 3.
- Since you are already using the latest version of TeamDrive, it is not necessary to uninstall the program. Instead, you only need empty the contents of the TeamDrive ‘data’ folder. To do so, start by opening the Finder.
- In the Finder window click on the ‘home’ icon.
- If the ‘home’ icon is not visible, please enable it by clicking on “Finder” in the top left of your screen. Then click on “Preferences” > “Sidebar” and enable the house in the section “Favorites”.
- From the menu select, “Go” > “Go to Folder…” or simply use the keyboard shortcut Shift + Apple + G. Go to the folder “.teamdrive”.
- Empty the contents of the “.teamdrive” folder.
- Locate your Spaces in your local file system. By default your Spaces are stored in User/Spaces. Once you have located your Spaces, rename all of your Spaces by adding “_old” to their existing names (e.g. “SpaceName_old”)*.
- If all of your Spaces are located in the “Spaces” folder, it would be enough to simply rename the Spaces folder before starting TeamDrive, instead of renaming all of the Spaces individually.
- Start TeamDrive and enter your login credentials. After successfully logging in TeamDrive will initially be empty. This is normal. However, if you receive invitations to your old Spaces (TeamDrive 3) or your Spaces appear in the section “inactive Spaces” (TeamDrive 4) please proceed to step 11. In the next step you will reconnect TeamDrive with your Spaces.
- To reconnect TeamDrive to your Spaces you will need to perform at least one of the following:
- a. Import your Spaces via the Space backup files. Per default the backup files are located in “User/Spaces/Backups”. Backup files can be imported via the “Backup” section of the settings menu:
- TeamDrive 3: “TeamDrive 3” > “Preferences” > “Backup” > sub-section “Backup” > “Import” > select all available backup files containing your username > “Open” > select the Spaces to be imported > “Import”.
- TeamDrive 4: Go to the TeamDrive settings > “Backup” > “Import Keys” > “Import from Backup File”.
- b. Import your Spaces via the Key Repository. If the Key Repository is already turned on it is possible that you may have already received invitations to some of the Spaces you were last active in. If this is the case please proceed to step 11, otherwise Spaces can be imported from the Key Repository via the “Backup” section of the settings menu:
- TeamDrive 3: “TeamDrive 3” > “Preferences” > “Backup” > sub-section “Key Repository” > “Import” > select the Spaces to be imported > “Import”.
- TeamDrive 4: Go to the TeamDrive settings > “Backup” > “Import Keys” > “Import from Server”.
- c. Request invitations to the Spaces you need to regain access to, from members who are still in the Space. Once you have received invitations to the necessary Spaces please proceed to step 11.
- a. Import your Spaces via the Space backup files. Per default the backup files are located in “User/Spaces/Backups”. Backup files can be imported via the “Backup” section of the settings menu:
- After importing your Spaces:
- TeamDrive 3: navigate back to the “Spaces” tab. You will now see your Spaces in a gray, archived state. You will now need to restore the Spaces. Right-click on each Space (or select them all) and select “Restore Space…” Remain at the “restore” window and proceed to step 11.
- TeamDrive 4: return to the main TeamDrive screen and click on “inactive Spaces”. Activate a Space by clicking on it once. Please proceed now to step 12 before doing anything else.
- TeamDrive 3: at the ‘Space join’ screen select “Advanced” > “Copy files from specified path”. Navigate to the path of corresponding Space you have already renamed in step 7, which exists in your local file system (e.g. “SpaceName_old”). Afterwards click “Join/Restore”.
- TeamDrive 4: once the different options for activating a Space have appeared (“activate”, “advanced” and “cancel”), click on “advanced” > “copy files from backup”, navigate to the path of the corresponding Space (which you may have already renamed in step 7) and click “open”.
- Once the join/restore process has been completed you will now have normal access to your Space. The “SpaceName_old” folder will still be filled with data and occupy potentially valuable local disk Space. At this point, after a successful join, the “SpaceName_old” folder can be removed at will.
