Secure passwords are a must for all accounts on the Internet. However, good passwords are not easy to remember. The password manager KeePass and TeamDrive will help you with that!

What is KeePass?

KeePass is free software that stores all your passwords securely. The password safe KeePass 2 is available for all current Windows versions (Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10) as well as a USB stick version.

The first steps with KeePass

To use the password Tresor, please download the latest version and install it. Once this is done, you can create a new KeePass database for your passwords in the program. You can save the database locally on a computer or better in a folder monitored by TeamDrive.  The extension of this database file is .kdbx.

The Master Password for the Password Manager

Then you have to define a master password. This is the password with which you can later view all other passwords. In the next step you can name your database and add a description. In the “Security” section you can also specify the encryption algorithm. You can choose between AES/Rinjndael or ChaCha20. As soon as you have configured all the settings, you can print an emergency recovery sheet in the next step. This sheet contains the master password as well as all other important information in case you cannot open your data directory anymore. If you do not want this, you can skip this step.

Creating passwords

Once you have created a database, you can store your passwords. For a new entry, click on the key in the menu. There you can give your password a name and store all important information such as username, password and URL. The password is always displayed encrypted by default. If you do not have a password yet, the password generator will help you to create a secure password.

The security of your passwords

KeePass is one of the most secure password managers. In addition to secure AES or ChaCha20 encryption there is also the possibility to secure your database with an encryption file, which you can also store externally. The passwords in the software are of course also encrypted within the memory. This makes it easy to transfer the RAM to the hard disk. In addition, the master password is also protected against so-called keylogger software.

Even more security with TeamDrive and KeePass

With the combination of the Password Safe KeePass and the Sync&Share service TeamDrive, login data between smartphones, tablets and computers can be synchronized conveniently and reliably. Both systems work with secure 256-bit encryption: KeePass for the password database on the respective device and TeamDrive for synchronization with each other. Another additional benefit of this combination that should not be underestimated is the automatic encrypted data backups that TeamDrive automatically saves in the secure cloud after each change in KeePass. This ensures that the KeePass data is optimally protected against loss and change in the event of a disaster, e.g. against a ransom virus infestation. All data is stored exclusively on servers in Germany.

Simply place your database file in a TeamDrive Space of your choice. Each change to the data directory is then automatically synchronized with all your other devices where TeamDrive is installed. This means that annoying manual changes to the entries on all your devices are a thing of the past.

“The database is just as well secured on site as it is during transmission using end-to-end encryption,” explains TeamDrive Managing Director Detlef Schmuck. KeePass and TeamDrive work on Windows, MacOS, Linux, Android and iOS. As open source software, KeePass is free of charge, the use of TeamDrive for private purposes is also free of charge.
