Hamburg, January 27, 2023 – The German data service provider TeamDrive offers its cloud service of the same name as an alternative to Boxcryptor. After Boxcryptor, until recently in German hands, was taken over by the US cloud service Dropbox, many users are looking for a way to keep their data encryption in Germany, TeamDrive Managing Director Detlef Schmuck has found out from numerous inquiries. Answers to the most frequently asked questions can be found at https://teamdrive.com/blog-de/ist-teamdrive-eine-boxcryptor-alternative.

Boxcryptor can be used to encrypt files before they are uploaded to a cloud, and the software works with popular US cloud providers such as Dropbox and Google Drive. Private Boxcryptor users who were previously able to use this service free of charge will lose their account at the end of January 2023. Companies are faced with the question of whether they want to entrust the encryption of sensitive data to a US provider.

TeamDrive: Encryption and data storage in accordance with German law

With the TeamDrive service, both encryption and data storage are firmly in German hands, the Hamburg-based company emphasizes. After the European Court of Justice (ECJ) declared the storage of personal data from EU countries in the USA illegal in summer 2020, many companies consider the purely German version to be more legally secure, as TeamDrive CEO Detlef Schmuck knows from many conversations. He says: “Many companies obviously feel uncomfortable transferring sensitive data to a US provider in unencrypted form so that it can be encrypted and then stored and processed. After all, every US company is subject to US law, which means that customer data must be handed over to US authorities on request. We are therefore currently experiencing an influx of new customers who prefer to use all these services in accordance with German law. I would like to say: Welcome to TeamDrive!” In addition to legal security, the TeamDrive Managing Director cites the close integration of encryption and cloud services as a further advantage. “All data is automatically encrypted with TeamDrive before it goes into the cloud,” he emphasizes.

Free for private use, 5 euros per month for business use

TeamDrive is free for private use – just like Boxcryptor so far. For commercial use, the costs are just under 5 euros per month per workstation. For this money, you get a cloud service that meets the highest security requirements under German law. TeamDrive offers seamless end-to-end encryption, zero-knowledge architecture, audit-proof versioning, two-factor access protection, automatic data synchronization between all authorized devices, regular backups and data storage exclusively in the Federal Republic of Germany.

With these functions, TeamDrive is suitable for professional secrecy holders such as lawyers, judges, doctors, tax consultants and auditors, which is considered the highest security level in Germany. It meets all the requirements of the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) and GoBD (Principles for the proper keeping and storage of books, records and documents in electronic form). TeamDrive also provides twofold protection against the outflow of sensitive data in the event of a hacker attack. If the private computer or company server is attacked, there are encrypted copies in the cloud. If TeamDrive is attacked, the hackers could steal data, but it would be unreadable because it is encrypted. Particularly important: As TeamDrive itself does not store any keys to customer data, it cannot fall into the wrong hands even in the worst-case scenario. In short: the hackers could steal data, but under no circumstances would they be able to decrypt it – and so the loot would be worthless.
